Flanders, though not being in itself a country, is a largely autonomous political community of Dutch speakers located in parts of Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Flanders is located primarily, however, in Belgium where it is considered a separate institutional region. The Flemish Region and it’s community operate with its own parliament and government in Brussels which it shares with Belgium’s French community. Flanders was immortalized in the poem “In Flanders Fields” which decried the massive casualties of World War I. The Flemish suffered greatly during the war, particularly in the battles of Ypres, but this suffering united the community with the experience of Flemish soldiers being lead by French-speaking officers paving the way for the autonomy of Flanders. Even today, speaking French to the Flemish is considered extremely disrespectful and could easily put you in danger! Good thing you will be learning Dutch when you’re there.
The Flemish region has 5 provinces: Antwerp, Limburg, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant, and West Flanders. Throughout Flanders cities are incredible architecture, medieval squares, canals, museums and outdoor cafes which the countryside is rolling and green. The biggest city is Antwerp which, with it’s large port, was at its peak in the 16th century. There you can see many of Rubens paintings or walk through the “vogelmarkt” an incredible outdoor sculpture park. Most visited by tourists is Bruges, a medieval town with many small canals giving it the title of “Venice of the north”. Bruges is considered one of Europe’s most romantic cities. Between Bruges and Antwerp is the city of Ghent which grew wealthy from textiles in the 13th and 14th centuries and now is home to many beautiful historical buildings and examples of medieval architecture. Wherever you settle in Flanders you will be able to see the medieval towers called Belfries which were solidly built to store merchants’ wares. The death of many men in the crusades created another example of medieval architecture called Begijnhof, miniature and often walled towns, which operated like a convent for widows and other women but allowed more interaction with the community. They can be found all over Flanders along with cafes, art and any number of inspiring sights for a student of Dutch.
