Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city of Brazil with 11.5 million living in the metropolitan area and the most visited city in the whole southern hemisphere. Rio was the capital of Brazil since Portuguese colonialism until 1960 and has impressive examples of the architecture and infrastructure of those two centuries. Rio de Janeiro has the largest Portuguese population after Lisbon and, after gaining its independence, saw a huge immigration of Portuguese in search of better living. Rio do Janeiro is a dynamic and growing city which will soon host the 2016 Summer Olympics, a first for any South American city.

Rio de Janeiro is immensely popular with tourists for many reasons. There are dozens of beautiful beaches with a unique beach culture. Walking along the beach are vendors with cold drinks and food and little shops that sell beer or rent out chairs or umbrellas. A necessary visit no matter how long you stay for is the funicular up the Corcovado Mountain. There the massive statue of Christ the Redeemer is placed looking out upon the city and has been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. There are also the “Pão de Açúcar” (Sugar Loaf) mountains with an incredible view of the city. Rio de Janeiro has the “Maracanã” the largest football stadium in South America and will host the 2014 World Cup. On a rainy day there are dozens of museums and art galleries throughout the city.

Rio has been the birthplace of Brazil’s most iconic forms of music: samba, choro, and bossa nova. There are numerous places to hear this music with plenty of them being centered around the Lapa district. While there are touristy samba shows in the months leading up to Carnival there are evening practice sessions for any number of the samba schools which are much more authentic. Carnival is the largest draw for tourists and the most exciting celebration of the year. Known for its incredible parades there are a number of celebrations to chose from throughout the area. Rio also has one of the largest New Year’s celebrations with 2.5 million crowded upon Copacabana Beach who spray and share chilled Champagne, a perfect time to use your Portuguese and shout “Feliz Ano Novo!”
