Quebec City is the provincial capital of Quebec and the province’s second largest city. The greater area is home to about 720 000 people and surrounding the city core are six burroughs where you may find yourself. Quebec City is located at a narrowing of the Saint Lawrence River and its name comes form the Algonquin world for “where the river narrows”: Kébec. Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America with over four centuries of history to explore.

While the city with its incredible architecture, museums, restaurants and the UNESCO Heritage Site of the Old City are all close to be explored, there’s many exciting places to visit close by to where you will be living. About 12 km from the city is the Montmorency Falls Park, home to 84 meter high falls which is 30 meters higher than Niagra Falls. Another much visited site is the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré just 30 km east of the city which has become well-known for stories of miraculous healings to many visitors of it. North of the basillica is Mont-Sainte-Anne ski resort with some of the highest slopes in Quebec and 66 trails which traverse the mountain. Another place to visit (though only in winter) is the Ice Hotel in the Charlesbourg borough. Even the beds are made out of ice but with Arctic sleeping bags you will stay warm.

Quebec City is also known for festivals. The two largest are the Winter Carnaval Festival and the Summer Festival. The Winter Carnaval Festival has a history of about century beginning in 1894 but even before that people would celebrate it privately. Best known for it parades, incredible ice sculptures and snowman-like mascot, Bonhomme Carnaval, it is an event not to be missed if you visit in the winter. If you arrive in the summer, however, you will be treated with Canada’s largest outdoor performance. Lasting 11 days, the Summer Festival has hundred of musical shows across the city from all imaginable genres of music.
