The Republic of Chile: that long sliver of a country that runs down South America between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. This is a land of extremes; it contains the driest desert in the world as well as glaciers, many forests, lakes and hundreds of volcanoes, including some which are active. The most popular Chilean tourist destinations are sites of natural beauty. San Pedro de Atacama is a much visited and culturally rich town which is located near many other interesting sites including the mysterious Valle de la Luna. Viña del Mar with its beautiful beaches, Easter Island, and some of the many Andean ski resorts are other popular spots.
Santiago: the capital of Chile and is the fifth largest city in South America. Nestled in a valley near near the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean, it is considered one of the most modern cities in the southern hemisphere and home to nearly 5 million people. It also serves as Chile’s commerce hub.
Chile’s culture has been influenced by those of Spain, England, France and Germany. Chilean folk music remains popular, and the country has produced several famous writers – particularly poets. The cuisine incorporates seafood, as well, of course, as its famous beef. But instead of a steak, why not try Asado or Curanto, two traditional dishes, while you’re there?
