The People’s Republic of China, often simply referred to as China, is a vast state with an equally large array of places of interest and cultural highlights to offer its visitors. It even has paradisiacal beaches, such as those located in Hainan, a province also referred to as the Hawaii of China. Many customs have been preserved in the Chinese culture, and several traditional art forms remain very popular. Sports, ranging from football to tai chi chuan and dragon boat racing, are also valued by the young and old alike. And then, of course, there’s the wonderful cuisine, enjoyed by many around the world. An interesting and tasty fact: not only can the innovative Chinese people be credited with the invention of fireworks and umbrellas, but also ice cream.

Beijing: The capital of the People’s Republic of China (with a population of 12 million) and an ancient capital of six dynasties, it is one of the most famous historical and cultural cities in the world. Beijing is the centre of China’s tourism and one of the world’s most fascinating cities. Beijing has countless things to see and do such as temples, parks, museums, palaces and the Great Wall of China is only 75 km away.

Shanghai: Shanghai is probably the most evocative city for an outsider in the whole of China. Beijing may be more purely, mysteriously Chinese but only Shanghai offers such a heady brew of half-digested images and preconceptions. Literally “On the Sea”, Shanghai is a port city on the Huangpu River, where the Yangzi River empties into the East China Sea.
