San José is the capital of Costa Rica with about 360,000 people. The metropolitan area is much larger, however, and about a third of all Costa Ricans live within it. Located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, San José is surrounded by mountains and valleys and the lush vegetation that has made the country so popular as a rainforest destination. While staying in the San José region you will have the city to explore but, since it is the transportation hub of the country, it is the perfect place to arrange tours and daytrips to the incredible sights nearby.

Within the city there are several museums to visit. Museo Oro Precolombino curates the local history from 500 AD to 1500 AD with a vast array of artefacts and information. The Museo del Jade shows the many uses and art made from Jade during this era. Meanwhile, the Museo Nacional is located in an old fort and has an incredible butterfly garden. The streets of San José are busy and full. Caution should be taken as the traffic moves very quickly and does not stop for pedestrians. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of petty crime so it is advised to carry your money safely along with a copy of your passport. In addition it is important to only take legitimate taxis and to keep your luggage when traveling in buses. If proper precautions are taken then you should have a wonderful visit.

While in San José you will be surprised at the number of bus tours available. You can take trips to Coffee Farms, a tour of the rainforest canopy, or even rafting adventures. Certainly worth a visit and within a day’s journey are two volcanoes: Irazú and Poas. Should you visit Poas the incredible La Paz Waterfall Gardens are nearby with a series of trails through rainforest and views of a number of waterfalls. Longer trips may include a visit to the most stunning national park, Manuel Antonio National Park with rainforests, beaches and coral reefs. Another weekend visit might be to the Chachagua Rain Forest Hotel. Situated in the Tilarán mountain range it offers a range of ecotourism activities and tours. San José is just the place to pair visits to some of the most pristine rainforests and beaches with the adventure of learning Spanish!
