The landscape of Bali, 'Island of the Gods', is made up of volcanic mountains, lakes and rivers, terraced ricefields, giant banyans, palm groves and beautiful white sandy beaches.
Stretching east to west across the island is a volcanic chain of mountains, dominated by the mighty Gunung Agung (Holy Mountain) whose conical peak soars more than 3170m. North of the mountains, where the fertility of the terrain permits, is an area devoted to the production of vegetables and copra.
The fertile rice-growing region lies on the central plains. The tourist areas are in the south, around Sanur Beach and at Kuta, which lies on the other side of a narrow isthmus.
Our school can accommodate a 1000 students studying languages and other fields. The easiest way to travel to the school and get around is by taxi which ranges from Rp. 7,500 (US$.80) to Rp. 25,000 (US$2.60). The average age of students is
around 35 years of age, many students come from Australia.
We have a wide range of student types attend our program from, Teachers of Indonesian language, Business people with links to Indonesia, Expatriates living and working in Indonesia, university students who want to learn Indonesian and people on holiday who wish to learn the language.
Each course is two weeks in duration and additional weeks can be added. Grammar and vocabulary are taught as a means of facilitating communication rather than ends in themselves. The program also includes 20 hours of cultural studies introducing Indonesian, and particularly Balinese culture. The maximum number of students per group are 12.
Our school has twelve native speaker teachers of Indonesian all holding a university degree and teaching qualification. Although they mainly teach using the direct method, all of them are fluent speakers of English and have undergone the process of foreign language learning. This enables them to anticipate problems encountered by students in their Indonesian course.
Examples of typical cultural opportunities:the school also offers a cultural studies program comprising of a series of lectures and workshops led by experts in the respective fields. Topics include Tourism in Bali, Dance and Music, Indonesian Business and Cultural Dos and Don'ts. There is also a full day trip at the weekend with an itinerary designed in liaison with the students.
Other highlights: The Island has thousands of temples, the sacred monkey forest at Sangeh, Volcanic chain of mountains, the Sea Temple of Tanah Lot, beautiful beaches, and flora.
Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 10 to 20 minutes away.
Students have access to all living areas in the house and in most cases, will be expected to share the bathroom. All bed linens and pillows will be provided, however we suggest you bring your own towels. If your family does not provide a laundry service, they may allow you to use the laundry facilities for a small additional charge.
