Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) – Course aims
Pre-MSA: Using a variety of classroom activities, this course will enable participants to build up the basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as developing language acquisition skills. Grammar is not presented explicitly at this stage.
Beginners MSA: This course aims to enhance the understanding and production, both written and spoken of *Different patterns of nominal sentences. *Present and future tenses of verbs conjugated with all pronouns. *Negation of nominal and verbal sentences. Negation of nominal and verbal sentences. *Useful basic vocabulary.
Early Elementary MSA: This course expands on the teaching points of the previous level in the past teaching the past tense of verbs. The course also deals with all essentials morphological rules related to verb conjugation, such as weak roots and the ten forms of the verb (in Arabic) as well as the sentence structures. All grammar and morphology presentations are contextualised in relevant situations, which expand on the basic lexicon.
Elementary MSA: This course provides the students with essential newspaper expressions and vocabulary. The course expends on morphological aspects of vocabulary i.e., " Masdars", participles, comparatives, active and passive voice, superlative adjectives. This will enable participants to understand and use them in meaningful contexts.
Early Intermediate MSA: This course details sentence formation, compound and complex sentences and related syntax, connectors, clauses and accusatives.
Intermediate MSA: Students will be exposed to different styles of semi-authentic texts with the aim of building a more specialized lexicon and expanding on grammar taught in previous courses. The course also enforces oral and written skills through a variety of classroom activities.
Pre-Advanced and Advanced levels: In these levels, students are exposed to a variety of texts to enrich their range of more sophisticated vocabulary whilst also widening their understanding of different styles of writing, i.e. informative, argumentative, philosophical, scientific and literary styles from different ages and different writers. This variety of authentic texts enables students to have a deeper and more analytical view of Arabic grammar and syntax problems. The students also recycle old structures and enhance and develop there writing and listening skills.
Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) – Course aims
We have structured our ECA courses from Level 1 (beginners) to Level 8 (advanced) and by the end of each level you should be able to:
Level 1: * Ask and give personal information * Greet people * Shop *Give instructions to a taxi driver * Talk about jobs * Tell the time * Deal with money and numbers.
Level 2: *Describe people * Use plurals * Talk about likes and dislikes * Invite and suggest * Talk about people's countries.
Level 3: *Talk about family * Dates * Possessions * Future events * Obligations * Ask people to do and not to do things.
Level 4: * Talk about the past * Tell stories * Ask about personal history * Make hypotheses about the future*
Level 5: * Ask for and give reasons * Talk about roles and cultural differences * Talk about feelings * Report opinions *Use connectors in ordering events.
Level 6: * Talk about owing and borrowing money * Use common social expressions * Extend past to present and present to future * Express regrets, emotions *Describe people and things.
Level 7: * Make travel arrangements * Express relationship between times * Give advice * Idiomatic expressions.
Level 8: * Express subtle sophisticated ideas * Put feelings into language * Use exaggeration and flattery * Engage in lively exchanges * Understand some of the cultural influences on the language.
NOTE: We have tailored our materials to serve function rather than structure, as well as practicing different language skills. Levels 4 to 8 contain a greater proportion of discussions, simulations and language projects than the earlier levels. As studying BOTH ECA & MSA readily compliment each other, we have time tabled our courses to make this
