Fukuoka City is located in Northern Kyushu, the westernmost of Japan's four major islands. It lies in the heart of the Fukuoka Plains and is bordered on three sides by mountains, opening into the Sea of Genkai to the North.
Fukuoka is renowned for its cuisine (the city has more restaurants per person than anywhere else in Japan) and its friendly and warm-hearted people. Fukuoka is an ideal location for a cultural immersion as it is relatively undiscovered by Foreigners.
Fukuoka is also bursting with culture: it offers many art galleries, museums, and theaters will give you your fill of the Japanese arts, while the nightlife is the best on the island. It is also the home of the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks, one of Japan's top professional baseball teams.
Housed in a modern and large brownstone building close to Tenjin Bus and train stations which are only 5 minutes walk away and offers public transport to almost anywhere in the city.
Students are welcome to bring their own laptops and use our free Internet access, plus coffee, tea and chai are provided free of charge during the day in our small kitchen area.
All of our teachers are fully qualified and licensed by the Japanese Ministry of Education to teach Japanese as a foreign language.
Classes at our school are divided into seven separate levels: complete beginner, beginner, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced, and expert.
We do accept complete beginners, however you will need to take our foundation course first. Also, bear in mind that it will take you some time before you become good enough to understand your favorite manga/anime. We will use materials suitable for your level.
The small class size allows you plenty of time to practice with your teacher and most classroom work is based on increasing your practical ability, and reinforced with practical activities outside of the classroom wherever possible.
All of the teachers are fully qualified and licensed by the Japanese Ministry of Education to teach Japanese as a foreign language. They are constantly evaluating new study materials, and creating new materials where existing materials do not satisfy them.
After classes are over for the day our program allows you plenty of time to discover your new country, culture, traditions, customs and everyday life.
Movie Night (One evening a fortnight), Game night (Japanese games such as hanafuda), additional classes, taught by visiting lecturers on Japanese cultural topics and beaches are only 10 minutes away
There are many temples, museums, parks and so on that you can visit. In addition, the closest beach to the school is only 10 mins by bus or bicycle, so from late spring to early autumn, you can relax at the beach after classes.
Living with a Japanese host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country.
All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 20 to 40 minutes away by public transport.
Students have access to all living areas in the house and in most cases, will be expected to share the bathroom. All bed linens and pillows will be provided, however we suggest you bring your own towels. Some hosts may allow access to their laundry facilities; otherwise you will be directed to the nearest laundromat.
NOTE: When requesting your family please inform us of what level of English you require them to speak. The lifestyle in a Japanese household is a mixture of traditional and more modern western styles. Futon beds, tatami mats and western beds and chairs often times coexist under the same roof. In most families the baths will be Japanese style: the body is washed first before entering the deep bathtub.
Japanese people usually eat rice, miso soup, and some side dishes for breakfast. Please try to have breakfast with them to experience it. However, if you prefer a Western-style breakfast, your host family is happy to offer what you like for your breakfast. Please request your preferred breakfast, such as bread, eggs and coffee or tea.

"I had a great educational and cultural experience in Fukuoka, JAPAN!
The language school was great, the teachers were excellent, the choice and quality of the programs were great, and the teaching/learning environment was superb!
The service provided by Languages Abroad was great. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. The information contained in the web site was very useful and thorough. The pre-departure information was thorough, current, and of great value.
I had a first rate experience with my host family! They were very nice people, and they made me feel right at home. I interacted with the family on a daily basis at breakfast, at supper time, and in the evening [conversations, watching TV, gathering with family friends, etc.]. The room, bathroom, and other facilities in the house were very clean and comfortable.
My host family was located about 20 minutes from the school by bus; however, I chose to walk (40-45 minutes)for the exercise.
Transit at Kansai airport (Osaka)is good and has the added advantage of bringing you in at the Fukuoka domestic terminals. Travel within Japan is expensive, so we would suggest connecting from outside of Japan, however there are direct flights to most major airports in Japan and most minor airports in Kyushu.
