Sainte Anne: Learn French in Guadeloupe - originally called Karukera - or "island of beautiful waters" - by its native Carib inhabitants. Its first European visitor was Columbus, who landed here in 1493 and renamed the island in homage to Santa Maria de Guadalupe, in Extremadura, Spain. Since 1946 the island has been part of the French nation as a French overseas department and today enjoys the same political status as any part of France located in Europe.
