The colonial city of Heredia, with a population of 50,000, is located six miles north of San José (approximately 20 minutes by bus). Known as the "City of Flowers", this city and its surrounding areas provide all the conveniences of a medium-sized town in an environment that has escaped, to a large extent, the normal urban problems affecting the capital. The city has a surprisingly youthful and active feel despite its small size.
This is due to the presence of the many young Costa Ricans attending the National University, which is located here. Many of Costa Rica's famous coffee plantations surround Heredia and one can still see ox-carts loaded with beans being pulled from the plantations.
In the small rural villages and farms surrounding Heredia, students can witness a very different way of life compared to that of the cities.
Closeby and easily accessible from Heredia are volcanoes (best known is Irazu), numerous beaches and the beautiful national parks. However, if you are looking for good night life or interested in museums and theatres, San Jose is only a short bus ride away.
We also offer a "SPLIT CITY" option with our SAMARA BEACH school, which offers the student the opportunity to visit and study in other areas in Costa Rica.
Occupying a old Spanish colonial-style house, our school is centrally located allowing students easy access to public transportation, shops and entertainment. In addition, classes are offered at the annex in Jacó Beach, usually the last week of each month.
The school is small but offers a very relaxed and friendly environment with many students from North America and Europe.
Students have access to a kitchen for cooking classes and a dance studio for dance classes.
Occasionally our teachers hold classes outdoors in the school tropical gardens.
Teachers are native speakers, university educated and have the credentials to teach Spanish as a second language. They are all certified by the schools "Professional Development Training Program" and regularly participate in ongoing seminars, both in Costa Rica and overseas, in order to remain abreast of current methodology trends and teaching concepts.
Current political, social and cultural materials are integrated to add interest and increase knowledge of the host country and culture. Homework assignments are given and students will be tested.
After classes are over for the day, our program allows you plenty of time to immerse themselves completely in the life of the town. Our optional cultural and social activities allow you to make new friends among your new international classmates. In some cases, a small additional fee will be charged to cover local transport and entrance costs.
From Monday through Thursday you have the opportunity to participate in salsa, merengue, cumbia and marcado classes, the most popular dances in Costa Rica. Also once a week we teach students how to make typical Costa Rican dishes!
Staff hold periodic talks and informal gatherings after class which cover a diverse range of subjects and inform students about topics such as the ecology and environment of Costa Rica, Latin-American literature, politics, women's studies and other socially and culturally related themes. Once a week they also show a film in Spanish, an entertaining and practical way to practice the language.
Intercambios program: during these cultural exchanges Spanish students meet with Tico English students at the school to practice conversation skills (in both languages) in a relaxed atmosphere, and to make new friends from the local community.
As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 5 to 15 minutes walk away.

"It was the best 2 weeks of my life!
It was such an adventure and I learned so much. Languages Abroad was very helpful and did a great job preparing me for my trip. My host family was so kind and welcoming and the house was very nice. I even had my own ensuite bathroom.
The classes were a lot of fun. It wasn't all boring textbook work; we chatted and played games and listened to music. My only complaint about the school was the tour guide, Jerry. On our weekend trip to Montezuma, he forgot me at school and we had to phone him and tell him to come back for me, and then he seemed to be more interested in partying with his friends than being a good tour guide."

Future Advice: Do it by yourself! I went alone, and found that you meet so many more people that way because you are forced to interact with others, instead of just spending all of your time with one or two other people that you already knew from back home."

My language skills improved greatly, and the people I met along the way and the places I visited were unforgettable. I recommend this experience to everyone."
