WHAT WE LIKE - Key features of this program
Safe, beautiful small city, lots to see and great excursions. School is located downtown, with patio and stunning views.

Enjoy a French language course in Switzerland at our language school in the city of Lausanne.

Lausanne is a truly elegant city, which resides on the hillside between Lake Geneva below and the woods above, surrounded by meadowland and vineyards, facing the Alps. Its hillside setting on the lake facing the Alps is truly spectacular.

Its old quarter, La Cité, has an impressive medieval cathedral, it is also a vibrant University City with one of the country's largest university campuses and home to the International Olympic Committee headquarters, which has a fascinating Museum on the Olympics with all kinds of exhibits and a library of Olympic videos.

Lausanne is a very green city with many parks and gardens. Its southern exposure on the Lake gives it a wonderful climate for all kinds of vegetation. Ouchy is the city's marina, which is beautiful and has excellent restaurants and fantastic yachts. The best beach is Vidy, where bikes and skates can be rented to explore the walkways along the Lake.

In the summer, Lausanne holds many outdoor festivals, street performances, and street parties, and the pedestrian-only shopping areas are excellent.

SCHOOL FACILITIES
Lcated downtown - 12 classrooms, multi-media learning center, student lounge area with vending machines, spacious lecture room and friendly atmosphere, access to computers with high speed internet/e-mail with free wiFi

Our school is located in the city center and is within walking distance of spacious parks, terrace cafés, shops, museums, wonderful bookshops and luxury stores.

Housed in a modern building, our school offers excellent facilities including well equipped classrooms and social areas, fitness club, large outdoor patio and a self-tutoring center.

It is the perfect town for strolling around on your own or exploring with new international friends.

THE BASICS
Course for all language levels - set dates for beginners - use of course materials - each student will be expected to take a short placement test on the first Monday morning - lessons are usually held in the mornings starting 08:30am each day - min age 18 - Max. 13 students per class - unlimited course length.

Standard: (20 lessons per week)
Intensive: (25 lessons per week)

Self study in the multimedia learning center is available for all students and there are learning resources of all kinds: audio, video, computer assisted language learning. These elements are all available for students to work independently.

The Communicative Abilities test may not appear to be a test. Every week, the student has a longer communicative activity, which the teacher uses to spot strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the teacher uses a detailed set of criteria to evaluate the language level demonstrated by those students who are leaving that week.

After classes are over for the day, our program allows you plenty of time to immerse themselves completely in the life of the town. Lausanne has more to offer young people than most Swiss cities: nightlife, bars, bistros, discos...16 museums and collections stage more than 50 exhibitions a year, from dinosaurs to contemporary art.

Each month, more than 100 stage and opera productions, concerts and variety shows fill theaters and auditoriums across the city. Musée de l'Art Brut has an unusual but fascinating exhibit of art by untrained artists including imprisoned criminals, mental patients, and eccentrics.

Activities offered could include: sports such as sailing on Lake Geneva in the summer or skiing in the winter at nearby resorts, guided Tour of Lausanne, Fondue Evening, Films at the School, museum visits including the Olympic Museum which hosts a great exhibition about the Olympic movement. Lausanne's magnificent cathedral from the 12th is a must see or take a walk along Lake Léman (Lake Geneva) to Pully or in the opposite direction to St. Sulpice.

At the weekend many students can arrange to take optional excursions to local cities or local places of interest. Trips could include: Boat trips on Lake Geneva, i.e. Evian (France), discover Avenches, a former Roman city, stroll along the shores of lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel, visit the towns of Zermatt, Vevey and a visit to the Nestlé museum, Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne, Berne or Interlaken.

Host Family: (private room - 2 meals daily)

Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. Many host families in Lausanne are located in flats, many are small but comfortable. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 20 to 30 minutes away.

However, you should also have realistic expectations and recognize that an element of flexibility is required to adjust to the local customs and way of life. Your host family may not have the same comforts as your own home but you will always be treated as a guest and free to come and go as you wish.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"I always had pleasant interactions with the Languages Abroad staff when I called. I thought the pre departure information was great being in the exchange industry myself, I thought that the information given was very appropriate and thorough.

My hostess didn't speak any English which was GREAT!! She was a wonderful cook and definitely was prepared for the hosting experience. She was helpful and understanding.

Future Advice: Just to really put yourself out there and try everything. I decided that I would eat anything that my hostess put in front of me, and that allowed me to try a lot of good food. Don't judge and be open. I could go on for hours."
Sara Vickberg (age 26)
