>> QUEBEC CITY IS CELEBRATING IT'S 400TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2008!
Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, 2008 is a full year of celebrations for Quebec City. COME, celebrate and learn French in the most European city in North America!
Anniversary website: http://www.myquebec2008.com

Located about 400km from the Gulf of St.Lawrence, Québec is one of the world's most picturesque cities and is the capital of the province of Quebec. The city is rich in history and tradition and has a European flavor.

You will enjoy the narrow cobblestoned streets, boutiques, excellent restaurants, typical street cafés and shaded squares emphasize the European air of the 'Upper Town'. In the 'Lower Town', the network of 17th-century streets centered on Place Royale has recently been restored.

Québec is the only North American city, north of Mexico, to have maintained its fortifications. With its old city walls, the characteristic green copper roofs and fortified Citadel, UNESCO declared the provincial capital a World Heritage site in 1985. It is the cradle of French culture in Canada with a 95% French-speaking population.

In addition to the Old World charm of the capital city of La Belle Province, Quebec also bills itself as the World's Snow Capital in the Winter months.

SCHOOL FACILITIES
Central location downtown - friendly family atmosphere, with professional teachers, 7 classrooms, social area, computer lab with access to the internet and e-mail.

Our school was founded in 1976 and is located in the old historic part of the city, housed in a typical old style building.

The school is on the 4th floor overlooking the narrow streets of the old city and is within strolling distance to all amenities, including small gift shops, bars, cafe's and the small street market.

Most other places of interest are also walking distance including the Château Frontenac and many people take the opportunity to go skiing on the weekends, during the winter months.

Our school is accredited by the following:
> governments of Canada and Quebec (RAP)
> a member of the chambers of commerce of Quebec City
> member of CAPLS and CEC

In the winter months students can ski / board just outside of Quebec City in the famous Laurentians (or Laurentides) which is also a provincial park, or enjoy one of the many events during the Quebec Carnival including snow sculptures, canoe races across a half-frozen St. Lawrence and snowmobiling.

Host Family: (private room - 2 meals daily).

Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country.

All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 5 to 45 minutes away.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"Engaged teachers, friendly atmosphere, motivated students and all this in the heart of one of the most gorgeous cities in North America!

My family location was suffciently close to school, very clean, good food, warm ambiance, plenty of French conversation. Only minor suggestion would be to move the dinner hour to later than 6 pm - very early to be eating, and disrupts the day.

Languages Abroad was very helpful, very efficient, just the right amount of information. Very positive impression - happy with both management and teaching. Very engaged and accomodating staff. Level of proficiency of group was perfectly chosen. Future Advice: Do it!"

"My host mother was amazing!

She was really patient with me, and helped me a lot with my french. Another student was staying in the house as well and we became really close. The classes were amazing with my first teacher but my second teacher went WAY too slow. It was a great experience, but I think next time I do an exchange I will not go into it as a complete beginner (it seems more beneficial to those at an intermediate level).

Future Advice: The trips are not as beneficial if you are a complete beginner-- try to get as advanced as you can before your trip, you'll get more out of it."
Sandra C. (age 19)

"Excellent experience.

The host family can make all the difference - it certainly boosted my confidence in speaking another language. Services Provided: They were quick to respond and well organized. The accommodation was generally very good. Found though that having too many students in one family reduces the invidual time to interact with native speakers.

The school was well situated and organized. Found it very useful to be in small classes. Would have helped to know how class time for group and private lessons would be structured."

Future Advice: Take the time to call the host family and try to be very clear. It's not helpful to pretend you understand what is being said".
Lisa V.
