Enjoy a Portuguese language course in Brazil at our language school in the city of Rio.
Rio, once the capital of Brazil, is one of the most dynamic cities in the world. A visit to the city of Rio de Janeiro entails a day on the beach - virtually as a statutory requirement. Life for the Cariocas (citizens of Rio) revolves around the vast expanse of sandy coastline with which the city has been blessed.
Situated on the southeast coast of Brazil, the cidade marvilhosa “marvellous city” is squeezed between the ocean and the mountains. Within this realm live around ten million people in varying degrees of wealth or poverty. The beautiful areas frequented by the wealthy stand in stark contrast and unnerving proximity to the slum areas, or Favelas, which litter the hillsides.
Rio's citizens are characterized with a passion and enthusiasm for life and they know how to party as best demonstrated at the annual Carnaval. The beach is not merely a place to absorb the sun's rays. It is an important venue for sports, socializing and even business dealings.
Our Rio school is conveniently located in the business center an area of high-rise buildings in downtown Rio de Janeiro, with easy access to any place in the city via public transportation.
The school is just blocks from the Uruguaiana metro station and close to the famous SAARA, a flea market where you can find anything at amazingly inexpensive prices.
Within a 10 minute walk is the renowned Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, one of the liveliest cultural centers in Brazil and Praça XV de Novembro, where you can take the ferry boat to Niterói and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The central location allows students to leave for a walk after class to the historical center of the city, or to any of the nearby theaters, museums, and cultural centers.
Our school offers modern and comfortable facilities. The school occupies the entire floor, featuring 10 classrooms with TVs and DVD players, air-conditioning and computers with free Internet with WiFi.
Teachers are native speakers and many are university educated with years of teaching experience. They will help enhance your speaking, listening, grammar and general comprehension skills. Please note that our school uses the Communicative Approach rather than the Grammar-Translation Method. (ie. teachers never translate in class and technical grammar is not taught, especially at the lower levels).
Grammar is of course very important and students are taught how to use it through a very practical approach. In this way, grammar is never tedious, boring or repetitive. Students learn to speak the language, not to analyze it. Teachers use interactive techniques such as role-play, games and sometimes videos to support lesson content. Current political, social and cultural materials are integrated to add interest and increase knowledge of the host country and culture.
Every week, students are invited to learn more about Brazilian culture by attending a lecture given by a Portuguese teacher. Topics rotate and include the Brazilian economy, contemporary literature, politics, immigration, history, religion, and cuisine. You can also take advantage of the chance to practice your Portuguese with a native Brazilian, as the school arranges weekly interviews with local residents.
Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained.
All of our host families are middle-class and live in apartments or homes in safe and attractive areas, one load of laundry per week is included.
As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 15 to 45 minutes away.

"It was a great expeirence, Rio is an amzing city.
The school was great, the teachers made the class easy and fun & my Portuguese definitely improved. Made some great friends and really enjoyed staying with my host family. Staff were always helpful and answered my questions and got back to me promptly.
Accommodation was unsure what to expect at first as it was my first time doing this. The family were so nice and I really enjoyed staying with them. I thought the school was very good. I liked that they changed the teachers daily, this gave students exposure to different teaching styles and used to hearing different accents. The teachers were great, the classes were always fun and enjoyable".
