Salvador da Bahia is situated on an arrowhead peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and All Saints Bay. Originally called the "City of Bahia", Salvador was founded in 1549 and remained the capital until 1763. During colonial times, the city was invaded by the French and Dutch and was also frequently attacked by pirates. Thus a chain of forts (including the "Sea Fort") was built to protect the coastline.
Salvador was also the first slave market in the New World, and had many sugar plantations. The city has managed to preserve many outstanding Renaissance buildings. A special feature of the old town are the brightly coloured houses, often decorated with fine stucco-work. One cannot overlook the beautiful beaches within this quieter region of Brazil.
The bairro is famous for its “Festa de Yemanya”, an afro-brazilian tradition celebrating one of the Orixas (afro-brazilian goddesses), which over the years has
developed into a big street party. The area is known for many famous clubs, bars and restaurants making it a perfect starting point for your visit.
Since Salvador da Bahia experiences beautiful weather, classes are often held outside in the garden, and topics center around students' interests; about their experiences in Brazil, and about the city itself.
Alternative Classes & Courses
All of our courses are focused on conversation, though there also will be writing , reading, and grammar requirements. Approximately 50% of class time you spend on speaking and understanding. Learning by listening to typical music or dramatizing usual everyday situations is fun and at the same time an effective way to improve and intensify your language skills.
The topics of the lessons are varied. Our teachers also use current news with newspaper articles including socio-political topics, theater or literature reviews as a form of teaching. Communication through dialogue is a valuable teaching method that our school uses. We also teach both grammar and vocabulary, but the main focus is on conversation.
Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families
are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host
families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 10 to 20 minutes away.
Apartments are normally located within the same distance as the host families (many are closer) and are shared (with other international students studying at the school). Our apartments are co-ed, however rooms are shared with the same gender. All apartments provide a well equipped kitchen (including cooking utensils), shared bathroom facilities and living areas. The apartments vary in size and number of bedrooms, depending on the location in the city but expect to share with 2 - 4 other students.
