On the weekend many students can arrange to take excursions to local cities or local places of interest.

Host Family (private room - 2 meals daily)

Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 10 to 25 minutes away.

However, you should also have realistic expectations and recognize that an element of flexibility is required to adjust to the local customs and way of life. Your host family may not have the same comforts as your own home but you will always be treated as a guest and free to come and go as you wish.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"I had an amazing time in Spain.

I felt that the students, teachers and families that I stayed with were all helpful, kind and made my experience one that I will always remember. I felt the staff informed me of all the key information that I needed. The website was very helpful in outlying all my options.

I really enjoyed both of my host families. Although the cooking in Malaga was very rich, the woman was very warm and welcoming. In Barcelona my host mother, Teresa, was very sweet and laid back. It was the perfect environment for me. It was also very helpful that they both spoke very little English because it forced me to work on my Spanish.

The school in Malaga was very close to where I lived and had a very tight knit community feel to it. The classes were very small (it was another girl and myself for two weeks) and it really sped up the learning process. The other students were all very interesting. It gave me a chance to meet people from all over the world.

My father was the one who pushed me to leave home for the long three months. I thought it would be far too long and I would miss home and my friends. Surprisingly the time flew by much more quickly than I ever could have expected.

Within the first week of being home I was wining to my friends about how I wanted to go back. This experience allowed me to meet other interesting people from all over the world as well as taught me the value of being able to understand and communicate in a different language. If I had the chance I would do the program for a year. It was an amazing experience.

Future Advice: Stay with a host family. I can understand why one might not want to stay with a family, however, as majority of all the other students speak at least a little bit of English, the host family is the most practical way to practice Spanish."

Madrid to Barcelona by high speed train - takes 6 hours
Note: The Spanish train system offers 2 services - High speed and local trains, the local trains normally stop at all stations and can take twice as long as the high speed version, which only stops at a few main stations!!
