WHAT WE LIKE - Key features of this program
A very western style city with scenes from the world's oldest civilization, truly a city of many faces, where ancient and modern co-exist. Personal program

Enjoy a Taiwanese or Chinese language course in Taiwan at our language school in the city of Taipei.

Taipei, the capital, is a very modern western-style city with glass-faced high-rise office buildings, luxury condos, and modern department stores, which tower above wide, tree lined boulevards.

Great nightlife can be found, with theatres, bars and clubs, but Taipei is still Chinese at heart, with an underlying current of traditional lifestyles and culture that make it fascinating for international travelers.

Throughout the city are timeless scenes from the world's oldest civilization: Taipei is truly a city of many faces, where ancient and modern co-exist.

SCHOOL FACILITIES
2 school locations - excellent factilities, 20+ class rooms, computerlab, free e-mail, social rooms and use of campus grounds.

Our school is the oldest and best-known language school in Taiwan (teaching Taiwanese or Mandarin Chinese). Since it was established in 1956, the school has grown steadily and now has 2 campuses in Taiwan.

School Center ONE occupies the third and fourth floors in a modern commercial building near two of Taiwan's most prestigious universities: the National Taiwan University and the National Taiwan Normal University. It has an abundance of facilities including restaurants, shops, night markets and bars in the surrounding area catering exclusively to students.

School center TWO (the Shih Lin Center) is located to the North of Taipei, in a two-story building complete with tutorial and group classrooms and a student lounge.

This is the smallest center in Taipei making it a very quiet and friendly place to study. There are also many restaurants, shops, teahouses, and a large night market in the area.

The school has developed customized language training programs for U.S. Government agencies and international corporations in over 35 countries, and has established departments of Chinese studies in more than 20 academic institutions worldwide.

THE BASICS
Courses for all language levels - set dates for beginners - use of course materials. Each student will be expected to take a short placement test on the first Monday morning. Lessons are usually held in the mornings starting 09:00am each day - min age 18 - private teachers - unlimited course length.

Standard: (15 lessons per week) private instruction.
More lessons can be added daily if requested, depending on the student's requirements and needs, both simplified and traditional characters are taught.

The schools teaching methods and curriculum cover all levels of language ability. Language texts are written especially with the non-native learner Chinese in mind, and are frequently updated.

At all levels of instruction, a comprehensive approach is stressed in the teaching of the four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Students study with several different teachers to expose them to a variety of different accents and perspectives. From the intermediate level onwards, students can direct the focus of their learning by selecting from a variety of textbooks and types of classes.

Beginner: Oral drills are emphasized in order to develop speaking and listening skills. Special attention is given to the pronunciation of the Chinese tonal system. Students follow a set curriculum using teaching materials designed to build a solid foundation in the language.

Intermediate: Class discussions give students an opportunity to begin using their Chinese in a wide variety of everyday situations. In addition, a greater proportion of class time is devoted to developing reading and writing skills.

At the high-intermediate level, students are given greater freedom to design their own curricula, and may select from a wide variety of classes and study materials. To ensure that students understand the context of the language they are studying, Chinese history and culture are integrated into the curriculum starting at this level.

Advanced: Class debates and discussions are used to broaden student’s range of vocabulary, and literature and newspaper reading help students to develop expertise in particular subjects of their choosing. Students are able to pursue in-depth study of specific subjects of their choosing and may use either the school materials or those published elsewhere.

After classes are over for the day, our program allows you plenty of time to discover your new country, culture, traditions, customs and everyday life.

Our optional cultural and social activities couldinclude: lectures, Chinese film showings, parties, sporting activities, excursions to historical sites and trips to attend cultural performances. Lectures, demonstrations and classes in specialized skills also may be arranged for interested students.

Enjoy Chinese painting, calligraphy, cooking, tea making, porcelain making, and paper cutting. In addition, the school encourages its students to participate in various international speech and debate competitions.

At the weekend students can take excursions or visit local places of interest: Night markets, rock-climbing and white water rafting, Chinese cuisine, magnificently preserved temples, National Palace Museum, traditional teahouses or puppet theatre.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"Languages Abroad made it easy to deal with the complications of traveling abroad.

They found me an excellent school, a good place to live, and prepared me well for what I would experience in Taiwan. It was a fantastic experience, and I am incredibly glad I went.

The staff was fantastic, very helpful, and very willing to listen to what I needed and do things quickly since I was going on short notice.

My accommodation was good, the people were very friendly. I had a room of my own and air conditioning, with a very convenient restaurant. I was informed about the distance from my school, so I was expecting it, and it was a good place, with lots of international students.

The school was excellent, in a decent part of Taipei, very convenient on the subway line. I received three hours of private tutoring a day, which was very nice. I feel like I improved significantly, especially in my pronuciation.

Future Advice: Have fun!"
Erin R. (age 24)
