Tokyo is a very large and diverse area, but all points of interest can be reached by public transportation. The Imperial Palace and the Palace East Garden is just one of the many beautiful gardens in the city. The Tsukiji Market in Tokyo is one of the largest fish markets in the world.

Asakusa (Old Tokyo) is a place in Tokyo where you will experience the real traditional Japanese culture. There are a few major sights to see, such as the Sensoji Temple and the Five Storied pagoda. The area is lined with colorful stalls that sell everything from festive treats and souvenirs.

Examples of typical cultural opportunities: visit the Tokyo tower, making Japanese sweets, experiencing Zen Buddism(Zazen) meditation at a temple, trying on Japanese Kimonos and seeing fireworks (Hanabi). All of these can be organized directly at the school.

For those of you who like to adventure off on your own, there are many places to check out. Electric Town (Akihabara) is the main shopping district for electronic appliances and the best deals in Tokyo. For those of you looking for the trendy and real Tokyo style shopping districts, check out Harajuku and Omotesando. Another neat spectacle to see is Palette Town, a futuristic area of Tokyo. For great views of the city skyline take a boat tour along the Sumida River. The school staff is more than willing to assist you in travel or excursion options.

If you would like to get off the beaten track and explore outside the city you can visit Hakone National Park with its famous hot springs. You can take a day trip to the nearby Mt. Fuji and the temple city of Kamakuca.

Tokyo experiences four distinct seasons mild spring and fall, hot summer, and winter with a few snowfalls. Average temperature in Tokyo is 16°C (61°F), August being the hottest and January the coldest. There's about 20°C difference between summer and winter. The hot summers seem to be more of a problem than coldness in the winter, for most of the foreign people who come over to Tokyo.

Good location in Tokyo, extremely friendly and helpful family.

All family members were excellent teachers and very patient."
Dr. Shawna Lemke (age 29)

"Living with my host family was the best part of my experience.

I loved every minute. I had my own room and bathroom for the most part. It was about twenty minutes away from school in a nice, safe, family oriented neighborhood."
Andrew Cattanach

Arrival airport: TOKYO
Toyko airport (Narita International Airport) is the main airport to arrive in when traveling to Tokyo. Narita is connected directly to the city by two main train lines: JR and Keisei. Narita airport is far from Tokyo, so be prepared for another long journey into the city.

The train is the cheapest way to get into Tokyo, but it takes the longest and may be confusing to understand if it is your first time to Japan. You can take an airport limo bus or taxi, which is more expensive but only takes between 20-40 minutes.

Shinjuku is a major urban transit hub: JR Shinjuku Station sees an estimated 3 million passengers pass through each day, making it the busiest station in the world. It houses interchanges to three subway lines and two privately owned commuter lines, as well as the JR lines.

Passports / Visa / Length of stay: It is the participant's responsibility to have a valid passport and any necessary visas and permits to study abroad.

Visit G3Visas for comprehensive information on visa, passport, permit and general country entry requirements.
