The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi being the largest and Dubai the most influential among them. While each of these fascinating cities is unique, both are equally great places to study Arabic abroad!

Arabic is the official language of the UAE but English is widely used, which makes things easier for international travellers. Abu Dhabi takes up 86% of the UAE’s landmass and Abu Dhabi city is both the capital and cultural centre of the Emirates. This city has many historical mosques and towering skyscrapers, with a rapidly expanding cultural district and many tourist programs. Currently Saadiyat Island, which is Arabic for ‘Happiness Island’ is being developed into a hub for the arts. Soon it will contain a branch of the Louvre, the Guggenheim, a Performing Arts Center, the NYU Abu Dhabi Campus, and a range of other attractions, all featuring creative and contemporary architecture.

Dubai may be smaller than Abu Dhabi but wealthy investors have made it into an extremely iconic and impressive place. Here you’ll find some of the world’s best shopping, the famous man-made Palm Islands, and modern skyscrapers like the Burj Khalifa, which, at a height of 828m, is the world’s tallest building!

The remaining emirates are smaller, but each has its own particular charm. Ajman has a beautiful natural harbour. Sharjah has many fun and exciting traditions like the famous Sharjah Night Festival. Ra’s al-Khaimah is primarily an agricultural emirate and retains a certain old-world charm. Fujairah is known for its stunning mountains and gorgeous beaches, and Umm al-Qaiwain is a tiny emirate with seven impressive fortresses and more picturesque beaches. Whichever of the emirates you chose to study Arabic abroad in, the UAE promises to be the experience of a lifetime!
