Irish schools require students to take Gaelic classes until they’re 13 so even if you’re not staying in one of the Gaeltachatai where Irish is the primary language, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice. There’s also a fair deal of Gaelic programming available, including the news, so you’ll have something to watch and discuss with your host in one of four delightful cities!

Cork, nicknamed the "rebel city", is a thriving metropolis in the province of Munster, to the South-West. This city is famous for its architecture, and just ten-kilometres northwest of the city is Blarney Castle, home of the world-famous Blarney Stone. Legend has it that those who kiss the stone will get the Irish "gift of the gab." The castle itself is also spectacular and the grounds now include the Poison Garden, where you can see Wolfsbane, Mandrake, Ricin, Opium, and Cannabis.

Ireland loves a good party, so it should also come as no surprise that festivals are popular in Cork. Depending on when you visit, you may be able to enjoy Corks Guinness Jazz Festival, Cork International Choral Festival, the Cork Midsummer Festival, the Cork Arts Festival, St. Patrick’s day festivities (of course), and more!

Galway, known as the "City of the Tribes", is a bustling town with a fantastic nightlife. There are many museums and tourist attractions to visit but you’ll likely spend most of your time exploring Galway’s charming pedestrianized streets and enjoying its numerous pubs. Galway is also considered to be one of Ireland’s most Irish cities and it’s one of the few places you’re likely to hear Irish Gaelic spoken in the streets, stores, and pubs.

Limerick is a small but incredibly lovely city located centrally between Cork and Galway. This delightful town is famous for its rich folklore tradition, exquisite natural spaces, and Neolithic ruins. During your stay in Limerick you should check out the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails – the longest trail network of its kind in Ireland. Just outside of Limerick you’ll find the famous archaeological site Lough Gur, which is over 5000 years old and has the largest stone circle in Ireland.

Dublin is a far cry from being a cold, heartless metropolis as this city is bursting with personality and youthful buzz. Here you’ll find plenty of enjoyable cultural activities, tremendous museums, castles, galleries, shopping, parks, and pubs. You can even have a pint of Guinness at the oldest Pub in Ireland, founded in 1198. Dublin may have the oldest pub but it has the youngest population of any European capital, so it’s no wonder Dublin is such a fun and lively place to live and study.
