The Principality of Monaco is the second smallest country after the Vatican City. With its 33,000 people squeezed into its 2 km2 area it is also the country with the highest population density. Legend has it that Monaco comes from the Greek for “single house” (Monoikos) as when Hercules passed through Monaco he threw out the other gods leaving only one temple as a “house” of Hercules. Monaco is divided into four areas: Monaco-Ville, Condamine, Monte-Carlo and Fontvieille. Monaco’s wealth depends almost exclusively on its tourism (an incredibly safe and friendly country) and its reputation as a tax haven.
Monaco-Ville which is known as the “le rocher” is the old city with medieval architecture and a most charming district. Through its many pedestrian streets you can explore a few of Monaco’s most visited sites. The Palais Princier is the country’s palace and provides an incredible view of the port and Monte-Carlo. Also in Monaco-Viller is the Monaco Cathedral which was built in the Romanesque-Bysantine style in 1875. One of the finest exhibits of Mediterranean and tropical marine life can be found at the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium with 4,000 different types of fish and collections of sea fauna and other marine life for viewing. Fort Antoine is at the north-eastern tip of Le Rocher and now operates as a theatre during the summer. A trip to Monaco also must include a visit to the famous Monte-Carlo Casino and Opera House even if you have no interest in gambling. Built by Charles Carnier in 1878, these buildings are simply resplendent with marble, gold, sculptures and frescoes that have made it the most famed Casino in Europe.
Various annual events make Monaco an exciting place to visit at any time. In January there is the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival featuring some of the world’s top performers. In April it hosts the Rolex Tennis Masters. Monaco is home to the most famous F1 Grand Prix in May being the only one that is held on city streets. In July and August there is the Monte-Carlo International Fireworks Festival lighting up the night sky. On November 19th is Monaco’s National Holiday with more fireworks and a great deal of pomp and ceremony. In a country so small it will be almost impossible to miss any of these exciting opportunities to practice French.
