The Netherlands, located in North-West Europe, may be small but it’s densely populated and has very many qualities and attractions. Also (somewhat incorrectly) referred to as Holland, this Dutch-speaking country is known for being a flat, flowery land with abundant windmills, canals and clogs. Indeed, half of the country’s ground is less than 100cm above sea level, and beautiful, colorful fields filled with tulips can be observed during part of the year. In case you were wondering, many of the windmills were used to remove water from land lying below sea level. The country also has 20 national parks, as well as lakes, sand dunes and forests. There are long beaches on the North Sea coast, which are particularly popular during the summer.
There have been many famous painters in Dutch history, including Vincent van Gogh. The Dutch cuisine includes diverse meat, sometimes in the form of strong-tasting dried sausages, as well as the renowned Gouda, Edam and Leerdammer cheeses. Sea food is also popular, as are pastries such as Oliebollen, which are traditionally eaten on New Year’s Eve. The wearing of clogs is also a preserved custom – they are still often worn in the garden as they are usually very sturdy.
