The Netherlands is a nation in North-West Europe bordering between Belgium and Germany with 16.6 million inhabitants. The capital of the country is Amsterdam although the government is situated in The Hague. The Netherlands is a low-lying country with much of its land being kept dry by a major series of polders and dikes for which the countryside has become famous for. The country’s current form can be traced back to the Dutch Revolt lead by William of Orange which made it an independent republic in 1572. Thanks to its extensive maritime achievements, The Netherlands was a major economic and colonial power. It grew into a constitutional monarchy and despite avoiding involvement in WWI was occupied in Germany in WWII and since has been a leading force in the legal prevention of wars. Today it is recognized for its incredibly tolerant attitudes to drugs, sex and an emphasis on personal liberties.

The Netherlands is a compact and densely populated country and its relatively flat geography makes it easy to cycle from city to city through beautiful countryside. Our Live & Learn programs are available in three of them: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven regions.

Amsterdam is the capital and largest metropolitan area with 2.1 million people. Built around a series of canals it is a beautiful city and was once the most important port during the Dutch Golden Age. It is the financial hub of the Netherlands with the world’s oldest stock exchange. While many will think of its notorious red-light district and cannabis coffee shops, Amsterdam is a major cultural city. The Rijkmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Hermitage Museum and the Anne Frank House are just some of the institutions you can visit. Meanwhile the historic canals have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and lend the city a particular charm. Like all of the Netherlands it is a pleasure to bike through and has a wonderful infrastructure for bicycles.

Rotterdam is a city in South-Holland of 1.3 million in the metropolitan area. It was always an important city but it was efforts in the latter half of the nineteenth century with the digging of a new seaway that its reputation as a major port city was formed. Now it is home to the largest port in Europe and up until recently was also the world’s busiest port until Shanghai overtook it. During WWII the city centre was heavily bombed and, rather than try to rebuild its historical character, Rotterdam rebuilt itself anew. As a result, it is a city renowned for its many impressive examples of modern architecture. The city may have lost some of the picturesque charm of other Dutch cities but a vibrant optimism is infused throughout the city and its people making it a friendly and exciting place to stay.

Eindhoven is a city in the south of the Netherlands with a metropolitan population of 750,000 people. It is a city built around two great institutions: the Eindhoven University of Technology and the primary location of the Philips Company. From its students Eindhoven gets plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants as well as a vibrant and youthful community. From Philips a number of cultural institutions have been funded such as major sports buildings and the Muziekcentrum Frits Philips. The efforts by the Philips Company to light up various buildings in the city has given Eindhoven the nickname the “City of Lights”.
