Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and one of the oldest cities in the world. In its long life it has been conquered and held by a number of different civilizations giving it a rich a rich and textured history. Nowadays, Lisbon Metropolitan Area holds about a quarter of the Portuguese population and is by far the most important city for the country in nearly every respect. It is a wonderful city to visit year-round with the warmest winter of any metropolis in Europe, an average day being 15 °C, and is the perfect place to learn the beautiful language Portuguese.

The gateway to Lisbon and perhaps its most famous building is the “Torre de Belém”. This fortified tower was built in the 16th century by King John II partly for defence and partly for splendour. Rising 30 meters it offers an incredible view and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the nearby Jeronimos Monastery. The “Mosteiro dos Jerónimos” is the ultimate example of the Portuguese Manueline style (a late-Gothic form of architecture). Other important pieces of architecture are the “Catelo de São Jorge”, located up the hill with a spectacular view of the city, and the “Ponter Vasco de Gama” the longest bridge in Europe spanning 17.2 km. A more historical but by no means less incredible achievement is the “Aqueduto das Aguas Livres” an immense 18th century aqueduct with a network of canals spanning 58 km.

While walking about the city will provide enough history on its own, you can learn much more of the Portuguese culture in some of the many museums. The “Museu do Azulejo” has some of the finest examples of Portuguese Tiled art. While the “Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga” has the most impressive collection of conventional art in the entire country. An immense maritime museum with many artefacts from Portugal’s eras of discovery is the “Museu da Marinha”, while the “Jardim Botanico” is seven centuries old and has a huge diversity of trees and plants right in the middle of the city. The city is lively and bursting with culture and native Fado music. Every June there is a 5 day street celebration of “Santo António” who preached to the poor of Lisbon. In a city so vibrant and with so much to see and do learning Portuguese will just be part of the fun!
