Basel is located at the intersection of the Swiss, French and German borders and, even though the city has a population of 166,000, the suburbs in France and Germany bring the Greater Basel area, called the “Regio TriRhena”, up to 830,000 people. Basel is one of the most important cultural cities in Switzerland with theatres, museums and a thriving art scene. The University of Basel was founded in 1460 is the oldest in Switzerland. Basel has much more history to be explored and is a wonderful place for anybody looking to learn German.
Most of the historical sites of Basel are in the Old Town between the Basel Zoo and the Rhine. The Münster is a necessary visit as Basel’s most iconic cathedral. The view from St. Martin’s tower is one of the best in the city along with the Pfalz just north of the Münster. The current Town hall is a renovated Renaissance palace which is also available to the public. The Basel Zoo is both the largest and oldest in Switzerland and is quite impressive given its located in the middle of the city. The Rhine runs along the city and is particularly lovely during the summer where, if you feel the urge, you can jump in and swim. Though, be mindful of the current. There are also over twenty museums throughout Basel though it is famous primarily for Art museums. The Kunstmuseum Basel has extensive permanent collections from the past two centuries as well as medieval and renaissance paintings. Just outside the downtown in the suburb of Riehen is the Fondation Beyeler featuring the most famous painters since the late 19th century.
One thing you may notice during your stay in Basel is the earnest and generally reserved character of the Swiss people. This all changes for 3 days every year with the Basler Fasnacht. This is Basel’s carnival starting the Monday after Ash Wednesday at 4:00 am sharp and continuing for exactly 72 hours. Though not like other carnivals, Basler Fasnacht may seem almost sombre with many very serious about their costumes and music. They overrun the streets and restaurants, however, and the citizens refer to it as “the three most beautiful days”. Another major event is Art | Basel which is held in June. This is the most prestigious fair of contemporary art and attracts some of the most major galleries and collectors worldwide.
