The United Arab Emirates is the federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ra’s al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Quwain. The Emirates is a wealthy country in the area possessing the sixth-largest oil reserves in the world. The quality of life and infrastructure is accordingly developed but the UAE is also unique for its multiculturalism. The population of the Emirates is about 5 million but less than 20% of them are native Emiratis with the vast majority being expatriates. The largest group Is Indian expatriates but there are also Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and sizeable populations of Asian and Arab countries as well as many from the West. This diversity means that any person is welcome in the Emirates making it a good place to learn.
Of the seven emirates Abu Dhabi is the largest and Dubai is, despite it size, incredibly influential. Abu Dhabi takes up 86% of the UAE’s landmass. Abu Dhabi city is the capital and cultural centre of the Emirates. It is a city that holds historical mosques and towering skyscrapers with a rapidly expanding cultural district and tourist programs. Al Ain is the capital of Abu Dhabi’s Eastern Region and is green from a large source of groundwater. Here there are incredible oases to visit and a large number of forts. Dubai is a considerably smaller emirate but it has become well known for the huge amount of wealth and investment in the area with enormous retail outlets and modern skyscrapers including the world’s tallest the Burj Khalifa at 828 meters. Dubai also has some huge reclaimed land areas, one in the shape of the world and another as a giant palm tree.
The remainder of the emirates are much smaller but each have their own charm and attractions. Sharjah is considered the cultural capital of the Arab world for it’s large Arts Area across from which is a renovated Heritage Area. North-east is Ajman with a beautiful natural harbour. This once quiet area is quickly expanding. Ra’s al-Khaimah is primarily an agricultural emirate and retains a certain old-world charm. Fujairah is known for its natural beauty with rocky mountains and gorgeous beaches. Umm al-Qaiwain is a tiny emirate but with beautiful beaches and seven various forts to visit. Whichever of the emirates you find yourself learning Arabic it promises to be the experience of a lifetime!
