Spain can be regionally divided into Northern, North-Western, North-Eastern, Eastern, Central, Southern Spain, Extremadura, and the Spanish Islands. Northern Spain is a stunningly beautiful region with green landscapes, majestic mountains, and plenty of incredible coastline. This area is at a crossroads between France, Basque Country, and the rest of Spain. In Northern Spain you’ll find the enchanting Navarre region – famous for Pamplona and the annual Running of the Bulls, the La Rioja province – world-renowned for its wines, and Basque Country – an autonomous area of Spain known for its incredible cuisine and distinct language.  

North-West Spain, also known as ‘Green Spain’ is comprised of Asturias, Galicia, and parts of Castilla y Leon. Although most people here can speak Castillian Spanish, Asturian and Galacian are their own distinct languages, and the latter has many similarities to Portuguese. One of the most famous cities in this lush region is Salamanca, a spirited university town renowned for its many stunning historic buildings and vibrant cultural festivals.

North-East Spain is divided into Aragon and Catalonia. It’s here that you’ll find bright, bustling, and beautiful Barcelona! This amazing beachside city has everything – incredible art and architecture, superb seafood, and an awesome nightlife. Barcelona has been inspiring bold artists, like Picasso and Gaudi, for decades, and it’s a wonderful place to get some inspiration of your own.

In Eastern Spain you’ll find the booming autonomous community of Murcia. This Mediterranean city is popular with tourists because of its lovely landscapes, beaches, and architecture. Further south you’ll find Valencia, which is famous for the Costa del Azahar (Orange Tree Coast), and the Costa Blanca (white coast), with its broad white beaches and crystal clear waters.

Central Spain is home to Madrid, Spain’s capital and largest city. This spectacular place is world-famous for its diverse art museums, tumultuous history, and incredible food. This passionate city, which invented Tapas and Flamenco, is the perfect place to experience Castilian culture while you study Spanish.

Southern Spain, also called Andalusia, is an enchanting region with wonderful weather, welcoming people, and plenty of fascinating historic sites. This paradisiacal region includes famously lovely cities like Malaga, Granada, and Seville. Here you can hang out at the Roman Theatre in Malaga, visit the gorgeous gardens of the Alhambra, enjoy the panoramic views from the famous Giralda bell tower, and more!

Extremadura has some of Spain’s most breathtaking and well-preserved natural spaces, including the Monfragüe National Park. The magnificent landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for impressive historic sites like the Roman Theatre in Merida, the Monastery of Guadalupe, and the ancient city of Caceres.

Both The Balearic Islands and The Canary Islands are world-renowned for their sunny weather and relaxing beaches. Tenerife is a spectacular island to visit all year round, and it’s the ideal place to experience the culture of the Spanish isles while you improve your language skills.
